The Word on the Street

JUST GOT OUT

So many amazing and fascinating things go on in Ipswich, as I move around on the streets making friends with people. There are lots of stories I can’t share, for various reasons, but I find there are many that I can.

I hope this series gives a colourful insight into life in the street culture of Ipswich. This is the community into which I speak God’s Word. I love the people, and I see God powerfully at work here.

JUST GOT OUT

prison_438I had a long conversation today with a fellow I haven’t seen for over a year. Whenever that happens, you can normally be pretty certain they are in prison. Sure enough, that’s where he was.

Last I had seen him, he was haggard, skinny, and had the tell-tale sores on his face and arms from a chronic meth addiction. Now he looks fantastic. He has been working out in prison, and he has lots of ambition to really make it. The whole town is nagging at him to get back “on the gear”, and he is doing well to resist it… for now.

I mentioned our men’s group. He hated the idea. He can’t bear the thought of getting to know new people. Of course, all the people he already knows are dealers and junkies, so new people is what he needs! Praise God that I know him, so I am able to encourage, affirm, and speak praise into his life. He has no idea how to deal with a group of men who will encourage and love him, but he can deal with one.

I got his number, and he is now getting my daily encouragement SMS (along with a couple of dozen other men in the town).

I you are inclined to pray, pray for him. God knows he needs all the support he can get.
